How these guides are written

Every guide here is written by the same people who book the trains: our operations and documentation team at Xi'an International Port. Where we quote a transit time, it is the figure we give our own customers station to station, not a marketing range. Where a figure depends on the season, the border queue or your commodity, the guide says so instead of pretending to be precise.

We do not publish freight rates. Rail rates move with the market, the corridor and the season, and a number on a website is wrong within weeks. Send us your route, commodity, volume and weight and we will come back with a route plan and a firm rate — usually within one working day.

Terminology used throughout

TermWhat it means
Station to stationFrom the rail terminal in China to the rail terminal at destination. Door-to-door times are longer by the pickup and delivery legs.
Block trainA dedicated container train that runs on a fixed schedule from one origin terminal to one destination terminal, without being split en route.
FCL / LCLFull container load, or less-than-container load — groupage cargo combined with other shippers' goods in one box.
Gauge changeThe switch from China's standard gauge to the wider gauge used in Kazakhstan, Russia and the CIS, handled at the border by transshipping or bogie exchange.
Middle Corridor / TITRThe Trans-Caspian International Transport Route: rail across Kazakhstan, a Caspian Sea crossing, then rail through the Caucasus towards Europe.
DDP / DAPDelivered duty paid versus delivered at place — who is responsible for destination import duty and clearance.

Frequently asked questions

Do you publish freight rates on the website?
No. We deliberately do not publish rates. Rail rates change with the corridor, the season and the amount of space available, and a published figure is usually out of date before it is read. Send your route, commodity, volume and weight and we reply with a route plan and a firm rate, usually within one working day.
Which guide should I read first?
If you are new to rail freight, start with the transit times guide to set expectations, then the rail versus sea versus air comparison to decide whether rail is the right mode at all. If you already know you are shipping by rail, the FCL or LCL guide usually settles the next question.
Are these guides specific to WideSafe's own services?
They are written around the lanes we operate from Xi'an and more than twenty other Chinese departure stations, so the examples reflect what we actually book. The general explanations of customs, container selection and the Middle Corridor apply to anyone shipping from China.
How often are the guides updated?
Whenever a transit pattern, a border procedure or a destination requirement changes. Every guide carries the year it was last reviewed. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will correct it.
