A direct service, not a Moscow shipment with a truck attached
The usual way to serve the Urals from China is to send the container to Moscow and move it back east by road — roughly 1,800 km, one extra handling, and one extra chance of damage. It works, and for years it was the only option. It is no longer necessary: Xi'an dispatches direct trains to Sverdlovsk-T.
That matters most for the cargo this region buys. Urals buyers are factories, distributors and engineering contractors ordering machine parts, hand tools, power tools, auto parts and building materials — mid-value cargo where a week of delay stops a production line and an extra handling is a real risk, not a theoretical one.
Service and transit
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Destination | Sverdlovsk-T (Yekaterinburg), station code 780302 |
| Transit, station to station | 11–13 days |
| Border crossings | Manzhouli / Zabaykalsk northbound, or Alashankou / Khorgos via Kazakhstan — chosen per departure |
| Equipment | 20GP, 40GP, 40HQ; shipper-owned containers accepted |
| Frequency | Confirmed per booking; the Urals is a thinner lane than Moscow, so book earlier |
This is one of the few lanes where the eastern route is genuinely competitive on time: Yekaterinburg lies east of Moscow, so a direct train is not travelling further to reach it — it is travelling less.
Two borders, and why we choose per departure
Via Manzhouli / Zabaykalsk the train joins the Trans-Siberian and runs west across Siberia. Via Alashankou / Khorgos it crosses Kazakhstan and comes north through the Urals. The first is usually faster for Yekaterinburg; the second is less exposed to congestion on the eastern border. We pick per departure and state the routing on the booking confirmation.
EAEU clearance and documentation
The declaration is filed by an importer of record registered with the Federal Customs Service, against a TN VED code, with duty, 20% import VAT and the customs fee paid on import. EAC certification applies to power tools, electronics, children's goods and a long list of machinery lines — and a certificate naming a different model than the invoice is the classic reason a container waits a week.
Delivery
Yekaterinburg city and the Sverdlovsk region as standard, including factory and warehouse appointments. Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, Perm and Nizhny Tagil are one truck leg from the terminal and quoted by address. Terminal collection by your own broker is also available.
What moves on this lane
Machinery and spare parts, hand and power tools, auto and motorcycle parts, building materials and finishes, industrial consumables, packaging equipment. Heavier cargo usually goes in a 20GP — about 28 CBM — while light, bulky goods take a 40HQ at about 68 CBM. Inside Russia, road weight limits rather than container volume decide the payload, so we check the gross weight before nominating equipment.
The box, and the payload trap
A 20GP holds about 28 CBM; a 40HQ holds about 68 CBM. On paper a 40HQ looks cheaper per cubic metre, and it is — for light cargo. For dense cargo it is the wrong box twice over: you pay for space you cannot use, and you run into the road weight limit before the container is full.
Inside Russia the binding constraint is usually gross weight on the road, not container volume. Tiles, steel, bagged materials and dense machinery parts hit that ceiling at around two thirds of a 40HQ, which is why the 20GP remains the default for them. Send us the gross weight with the enquiry and we will nominate the box that actually lands cheapest per tonne or per cubic metre — not the one that fills the schedule.
What goes wrong on this lane, and how we pre-empt it
- A customs description that is too generic. Russian customs reads the invoice literally; six items under one line called “spare parts” invites a query and a week's delay. We itemise the invoice with you before departure.
- An EAC certificate naming a different model. Common when a supplier ships a variant. The certificate must cover what is in the box.
- Missing the thinner departure. The Urals is not Moscow: fewer trains, so a missed cut-off costs more days. We confirm the departure in writing and work the cut-off backwards into your production plan.
- Assuming the carrier carries the risk. Rail liability under the CIM/SMGS waybill is capped per kilogram. Transit insurance at 110% of invoice value is arranged separately, and we ask for it before departure.
What we need to quote
- Commodity and HS/TN VED code — drives duty and whether EAC certification applies.
- Packages, dimensions, gross weight — decides the box and the payload check.
- Pickup address in China, delivery address in Russia — decides the door scope.
- Incoterm — EXW, FCA, FOB, DAP or DDP.
- Consignee status — INN and customs registration, or whether a customs representative is needed.
Import documents for the Urals
| Document | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Commercial invoice | Description, model, quantity, unit value, Incoterm |
| Packing list | Packages, dimensions, gross and net weight, marks |
| Contract / purchase order | Parties and payment terms |
| TN VED code | Determines duty; we classify with you if needed |
| EAC certificate or declaration | Power tools, electronics, children's goods, machinery |
| Origin certificate | Where a preferential duty rate applies |
Russian customs reads descriptions literally. Six different items under one line called “spare parts” will be queried; the same six itemised by model and function will not. We prepare the invoice lines with you before the declaration, not after a hold.
What moves in full containers on this service
Routine — machinery and spare parts, auto and motorcycle components, furniture and furniture components, textiles and apparel, plastics and packaging, building materials and tiles, solar modules, small appliances without batteries, industrial consumables.
Needs checking before booking — lithium batteries (UN38.3 test summary and MSDS), magnets, liquids, powders, food-contact articles, cosmetics, and any product that is dual-use or export-controlled. Rail accepts several of these categories, but with extra declaration and packing rules that have to be settled before the container is gated in.
We do not carry — dangerous goods outside the permitted classes, counterfeit or IP-infringing goods, live animals, and anything the destination country prohibits. A container rejected at the border costs more than the freight ever did.
