FCL or LCL: how to choose

The question is not only about volume. It is about whether the space you are not using is worth more than the handling and time you save by not sharing a container.

FCLYou book the whole container
LCLYou pay for the space you use

WeeklyFrequency on our main LCL lanes

The short answer

LCL exists so you do not pay for empty container space — we run groupage from a single pallet upwards, with no minimum beyond one pallet. FCL takes over when the cargo is large enough that the handling and waiting involved in sharing a container costs more than the space you would save.

The framework, in order

  1. Measure the cargo honestly. Volume in cubic metres and gross weight in tonnes. LCL is charged on the greater of volume and weight, so a small dense pallet of steel parts can cost more than a large light one of packaging.
  2. Check the weight ceiling. Above a certain weight for a given volume the cargo becomes more economical as a full container, because the LCL weight basis stops being competitive. We model this against your actual numbers.
  3. Ask how time-critical it is. LCL waits for consolidation at the origin and for devanning at destination. A full container leaves and arrives as a unit. If a few days matters, FCL buys them.
  4. Look at how the cargo is packed. Loose, irregular or fragile cargo shares space with other shippers' goods in LCL, so it needs export packing that can take it. FCL keeps your goods alone from door to door.
  5. Decide on the destination. On lanes with regular LCL consolidation, groupage is straightforward. On thinner lanes, the wait for a full container of groupage can be longer than you want.

If you are near the crossover point, ask us to model both. The honest answer is sometimes that LCL is cheaper on paper and FCL is cheaper in practice once devanning, waiting and the risk of handling damage are counted.

Where our groupage runs

Our LCL service consolidates at our own CFS warehouse at Xi'an International Port and runs on these lanes: Xi'an to Baku with regular departures, Xi'an to Moscow twice weekly, Xi'an to Duisburg and Warsaw weekly, and Xi'an to Central Asia weekly. Cargo arrives from anywhere in China on our own collection fleet and is palletised, weighed and photographed before the container is sealed. See Rail LCL from China for the operational detail.

A rule of thumb, used carefully

Light, bulky cargo crosses over to FCL earlier; heavy, dense cargo stays competitive in LCL for longer than people expect, and sometimes stops being competitive while still looking small. The only reliable answer comes from running your actual dimensions and weights — which is what we do when you send them.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum volume for LCL?
One pallet. We run groupage from a single pallet upwards, so you never pay for empty container space and there is no minimum cubic metre requirement beyond that first pallet.
When does FCL become cheaper than LCL?
It depends on the cargo, not just the volume. Light bulky goods reach the crossover sooner because LCL charges on volume; dense heavy goods stay competitive in LCL longer, and heavy cargo can become uneconomic as LCL before the volume suggests it should. Send us the dimensions and weights for each line and we will model both.
Is LCL slower than FCL?
Yes, generally. LCL waits for the consolidation to fill before the container is sealed, and waits again at destination for devanning and separation. FCL departs and arrives as a unit. On our main lanes LCL runs weekly or better, so the wait is bounded rather than open-ended.
Can I ship dangerous goods or batteries as LCL?
Sensitive categories are pre-checked with the platform before booking, so tell us at the enquiry stage rather than at the loading dock. Lithium batteries, liquids and powders all attract additional requirements, and for some categories a full container is the only practical option.
How is LCL charged?
On the greater of cubic metres and weight, since a container can be filled by volume or be limited by weight. Your quote will state which basis applies, which is exactly the line to check when comparing two LCL quotes.
