Ask for a rail LCL rate from Xi'an to Moscow and the routing you get will almost always be the western corridor: Alashankou or Khorgos, through Kazakhstan, 12–16 days station to station. That lane is dense and it is the right default. Manzhouli is the northern alternative, and it matters in the weeks when the western corridor stops behaving like a schedule.
How the northern route breaks down
| Leg | Distance | Transit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xi'an International Port → Manzhouli | c. 2,700 km | 3–4 days | Domestic block train |
| Manzhouli / Zabaykalsk | — | 1–2 days | Gauge change 1,435 to 1,520 mm |
| Zabaykalsk → Moscow | c. 6,700 km | 12–14 days | Trans-Siberian, no further transhipment |
| Total, station to station | c. 9,400 km | 18–22 days | Add 3–5 days door to door |
The difference is not the number of gauge changes — both routes have one. It is distance: Manzhouli sits about 1,900 km further from Xi'an than Alashankou, and no terminal efficiency makes that up.
Why LCL adds one to three days
A 40HQ leaves when it is full; an LCL box leaves when enough shippers have filled it. In a busy month that is days, in a quiet one it is the next departure, which is why a serious LCL quote is built around a scheduled departure.
Pricing follows the same logic. Groupage is charged on volume from 1 CBM, with heavy cargo converted at 1:500 — one cubic metre counts as 500 kg, and you pay on the larger figure. Light, bulky goods benefit. Machinery and steel parts usually flip to weight, where a 20GP is often cheaper than groupage.
What a rate should itemise
We do not publish rates, but a quote is only comparable if it separates four blocks: origin (pickup, palletising, securing), export (declaration, manifest), main carriage (rail freight plus the gauge change), and destination (terminal, clearance, temporary storage, last mile).
Documents and importer of record
The consignment moves on a СМГС railway note, not a sea bill of lading. A licensed broker files the ДТ, with goods classified under ТН ВЭД ЕАЭС. The importer of record must be a Russian entity with ИНН and ОГРН — a Chinese shipper cannot be the declarant. Import VAT is 20% and recoverable, which is why a correct code matters more than a cheap tariff: a wrong code stops the VAT recovery, not just the release.
Which Moscow terminal
Groupage does not arrive at one address. The usual points are Vorsino, Selyatino, Elektrougli and Bely Rast, scattered across different directions. Choose against the receiver’s warehouse and broker, not the cheapest handling that week: the wrong side of Moscow costs more in trucking than it saves. For cargo bound for Novosibirsk or Yekaterinburg, a northern entry sometimes skips Moscow altogether.
When to take the northern gate
- Peak congestion west. Manzhouli absorbs volume when Alashankou and Khorgos queue. The value is reliability, not speed.
- The buyer names the gateway. Some Russian importers hold a broker or warehouse at Zabaykalsk.
- The cargo is already in the northeast. Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin, Tianjin and Qingdao save trucking by going north instead of south to Xi'an — we consolidate in Xi'an and collect at origin.
High value, low volume and date-critical cargo is still better on the western lane at 12–16 days. Above roughly 15 CBM, price a full container first.
Gateway and transit comparison sits on the Xi'an–Moscow service page; groupage mechanics are under China–Russia rail LCL.
