Most groupage from Xi'an to St Petersburg leaves through the western gateway — Alashankou or Khorgos, about 20 days station to station — and that remains the default. Manzhouli is the northern alternative: north through Inner Mongolia, a gauge change at Zabaykalsk, then the Trans-Siberian west to Shushary. It is slower, it bypasses Kazakhstan entirely, and it only changes gauge once, which matters when the western border is congested.
The three legs, one gauge change
| Leg | Distance | Transit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xi'an International Port → Manzhouli | c. 2,700 km | 3–4 days | Domestic block train via Baotou and Binzhou |
| Manzhouli / Zabaykalsk | — | 1–2 days | Gauge change 1,435 to 1,520 mm; queues in peak season |
| Zabaykalsk → Shushary | c. 7,300 km | 14–16 days | Trans-Siberian, no further transhipment, includes marshalling |
| Total, station to station | c. 10,000 km | About 25 days | Add 3–5 days door to door; 2–4 days in peak |
The legs add up to 18–22 days; the lane is planned at about 25. The difference is dwell time at the border, in the marshalling yard and between departures. That is why groupage transit is quoted against a scheduled departure rather than a fixed number of days.
Why Shushary is the Northwest hub
Shushary sits just south of St Petersburg and is the city’s main rail container terminal, next to the warehousing and distribution districts. Its value is not the city itself but the catchment: the whole of Leningrad Oblast, plus Novgorod, Pskov, Karelia and cargo heading for Murmansk. For those destinations, arriving at Shushary beats arriving in Moscow and trucking back northwest.
St Petersburg is also a port city, so most search results for “LCL St Petersburg” are sea freight: 35–45 days with a Baltic feeder leg. Rail groupage closes that gap without requiring a full container.
How groupage is priced and paced
LCL is charged on volume from 1 CBM, with heavy cargo converted at 1:500 — one cubic metre counts as 500 kg and you pay on the larger figure. Light, bulky goods benefit. Machinery, castings and steel parts usually flip to weight, at which point a 20GP is the better buy; above roughly 15 CBM, price a full container first.
On the same departure, groupage runs one to three days behind a full container. The delay is not the train: a 40HQ leaves when it is full, an LCL box leaves when enough shippers have filled it.
What a rate should itemise
We do not publish rates, but a quote is comparable only if it separates four blocks: origin (pickup, receiving, palletising, securing), export (declaration, manifest, terminal handling), main carriage (rail freight plus the gauge change), and destination (terminal charges, clearance, temporary storage, last mile).
Documents and importer of record
The consignment moves on a СМГС railway note. A licensed broker files the ДТ, with the goods classified under ТН ВЭД ЕАЭС. The importer of record must be a Russian entity with ИНН and ОГРН — a Chinese shipper cannot be the declarant. Import VAT is 20% and recoverable, so a wrong code costs more than a slow release: it stalls the VAT recovery too. Where the receiver has no bonded facility, goods can sit at a СВХ while paperwork is completed. Delivery covers the city and Leningrad Oblast; Novgorod, Pskov and other northwestern destinations are confirmed per address.
Western and northern gateway comparison sits on the St Petersburg service page; groupage mechanics are under China–Russia rail LCL.
